Acquaintance Day Offers Career Exploration, Leadership Activities

Local FFA members explored agriculture careers and learned about teamwork at McLean County Farm Bureau’s annual Acquaintance Day program held Jan. 24.

About 90 sophomores from eight local high schools attended the event.

Superintendent of LeRoy Schools, Gary Tipsord, kicked off the day by encouraging students to take advantage of opportunities and make a positive impact.

Ag professionals offered a look at the wide variety of fields in agriculture from food science to agricultural technology and agri-tourism to horticulture during the Career Fast Track activity.
Illinois State University Collegiate Farm Bureau members offered insight on choosing a college and a major.

Team building activities facilitated by 4-H Memorial Camp staff provided the opportunity to learn about communication, collaboration and leadership.

Students also had the chance to drive a tractor or combine, courtesy of Birkey’s Farm Store.

After lunch, Mark Schweitzer vice president, Investor Relations, for Archer Daniels Midland Company, offered tips for students to prepare for their future careers.

ISU Collegiate Farm Bureau led a couple of game show activities to round out the day.
Acquaintance Day is an annual event designed to help FFA members understand the purpose of Farm Bureau and its programs.
