BIG SODA FIGHTING COOK COUNTY BEVERAGE TAX

The soda industry buckling down in Cook County, ready to fight a proposed sweetened beverage tax which would add a penny-per-ounce to the cost of sugar- and artificially-sweetened drinks if approved by Cook County commissioners next month. Proponents point to public health benefits, saying the tax will cut down on consumption of the drinks and thus, the incidences of obesity, diabetes and other health conditions. (Chicago Tribune)
