Monsanto is working with apiaries around the country to help solve the problem of invasive varroa mites, which are deadly to honeybee populations. The company is working to develop a treatment for hives that is more specific in targeting the pests than synthetic chemicals and uses DNA to target genes unique to only the varroa mite. Monsanto has already signed up 2,500 bee colonies around the country for trials of the product. (St. Louis Post Dispatch)
