Illinois hog producers filed more than 120 expansion notices with state regulators in 2015 and already have filed half as many this year. Consumer demand and the best pork prices in years are driving the expansion. Prices that a couple of years ago were $20 per head below break-even are now about $15 above. Many of the newcomers to hog farming are grain farmers trying to even out the ups-and-downs of corn and soybean prices, according to the industry, as reported by the State Journal Register.
