FLOOD WATERS CARRY MAJOR POLLUTION, HEALTH RISKS

Floodwater could include wastewater and other things such as fertilizers, pesticides, herbicides, not to mention livestock waste, industrial chemicals, dead animals and fuel. With each bout of broad flooding, such pollution threatens to sicken anyone who wades into the water, prompting health officials to urge residents to keep current on tetanus shots and stay out of water if they can. The floodwaters may also contain 100 types of disease-causing bacteria, as reported by the Associated Press.
