Abbie Sperry, a resource conservationist with the Hancock County Soil and Water Conservation District, says helping maintain the state’s soil, and educating others on its importance, are key missions for soil and water conservation districts statewide. Their efforts could be washed away in the ongoing budget battle. “It takes 500 years to grow one inch of soil … and once it’s gone, it’s gone,” Sperry said, as reported in the Quincy Herald-Whig.
