Important Illinois Nutrient Loss Reduction Strategy Meeting

What does the NRLS mean for your farm? Find out Wed., June 24 at 10 a.m. in the Mini Expo Building on the McLean County Fairgrounds in Bloomington.

The meeting will provide key information for farmers and address best management practices specific to the Mackinaw River, Lake Bloomington & Lake Evergreen watersheds.

Farmers are invited to bring water samples from their farms to be tested on-site at the meeting. The results will provide a snapshot of ambient nutrient levels in water collected from tile drainage, surface runoff or nearby streams.

Water test results will only be provided to the farmer and will not be retained or recorded. For water sample collection instructions, click here.

The Illinois Nutrient Loss Reduction Strategy provides a framework for reducing nutrient losses, improving local water quality and improving water quality learning the state and entering the Gulf of Mexico.

Scheduled for release in July, the strategy identifies targets to reduce phosphorus losses by 25% and the nitrate-nitrogen losses by 15% by 2025. The eventual goal is a 45% reduction.

The meeting is sponsored by Illinois Council on Best Management Practices and hosted by the McLean, Tazewell and Woodford County Farm Bureaus. To see additional meeting locations click here.
