Local Schools win Ag in the Classroom Grants

Nine local schools will be sprouting seeds and learning about how plants grow with container gardens and books thanks to a grants from Illinois Agriculture in the Classroom.

Grant recipients receive reusable gardening materials including an EarthBox® container, money to purchase soil and seeds, and related books and lessons to further the educational experience.

The winning classrooms include:

  • Mary Aper, 1st Grade at Benjamin Elementary
  • Amanda Carter, 1st Grade at Sheridan Elementary
  • Greg Conn, 7th & 8th Grade at LeRoy Junior High
  • Julie Duff, 1st Grade at Fairview Elementary
  • Tracy Hitchins, pre-K at Sugar Creek Elementary
  • Sarah Johson, 4th Grade at Tri-Valley Middle School
  • Anita Kirk, Kindergarten at Oakland Elementary
  • Julie Schopp, 2nd Grade at LeRoy Elementary
  • Mary Ann Schweers, 1st Grade at St. Mary’s Elementary

In all, 222 teachers from 58 counties in Illinois were awarded a Container Garden grant for use in the classroom.

The grant program was made possible by a $42,000 donation from Archer Daniels Midland Company  to the IAA Foundation for the  Illinois Agriculture in the Classroom Program.
