– The Illinois Supreme Court this morning ruled that state retiree health insurance benefits cannot be eliminated or reduced, because the state constitution protects them. Today’s ruling likely complicates the General Assembly’s efforts to fix the ever-growing pension funding deficit. Illinois’ unfunded pension liability is $100 billion, while its unfunded liability for retiree healthcare stood at nearly $34.5 billion in fiscal 2013.
